Honestly don't know how humor about a tragic murder can be so funny, but this The Word feature really is. I can't remember when I laughed so hard.

*hearts Colbert*

Yesterday we joined the law students at my university in a hoodie-wearing event to raise awareness about Trayvon Martin's murder and Stand Your Ground laws. The particulars of this dialogue would be completely hilarious if the underlying causes--and what's not getting talked about, as Colbert points out--didn't make me want to *headwall* so bad.

I'm torn myself on the hoodies. As a white woman in a neighborhood with a lot of ethnic diversity (mostly hispanic, some Arab) I'm all too aware of my racial privilege. I can't wear a hoodie and have people see me as anything other than normal, or perhaps a protester. This whole thing has left me feeling muted, since I feel like if I say too much I'll somehow be trespassing. I can't quite explain it. Doesn't mean I'm not horrified of course, or that the news isn't affecting my blogging, teaching, etc. in subtle ways.

On the comedy - yeah, I get that! It's hard to laugh about this story. But I think if anyone can pull it off it's Colbert, because of his persona as an uber-conservative. It's theater of the absurd without even acknowledging the farce, so the crazy-making aspects just shin through.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I found the clip totally hilarious! His delivery and mannerisms are perfect as usual, and the writing is brilliant.

Re: the event, we weren't wearing hoodies as a sign of protest--I mean, I don't think we were, but rather to draw attention to the fact that what should be just a regular item of clothing has become a proxy for all kinds of other things that are way harder to talk about, like racial profiling and race-related anxiety. While I can definitely see where you're coming from, personally I think that no one should feel constrained about weighing in in those dialogues, regardless of one's "minority"/"majority" status. Of course, comfort level with symbols, real or perceived, is also a very personal thing.

Over at FB, a friend of a friend suggested Stewart/Colbert 2016. So yeah, I'm so with you these days...
