Honestly don't know how humor about a tragic murder can be so funny, but this The Word feature really is. I can't remember when I laughed so hard.

Date: 2012-03-28 03:22 am (UTC)Yesterday we joined the law students at my university in a hoodie-wearing event to raise awareness about Trayvon Martin's murder and Stand Your Ground laws. The particulars of this dialogue would be completely hilarious if the underlying causes--and what's not getting talked about, as Colbert points out--didn't make me want to *headwall* so bad.

But I think if anyone can pull it off it's Colbert, because of his persona as an uber-conservative. It's theater of the absurd without even acknowledging the farce, so the crazy-making aspects just shin through.

Date: 2012-03-28 03:48 am (UTC)Re: the event, we weren't wearing hoodies as a sign of protest--I mean, I don't think we were, but rather to draw attention to the fact that what should be just a regular item of clothing has become a proxy for all kinds of other things that are way harder to talk about, like racial profiling and race-related anxiety. While I can definitely see where you're coming from, personally I think that no one should feel constrained about weighing in in those dialogues, regardless of one's "minority"/"majority" status. Of course, comfort level with symbols, real or perceived, is also a very personal thing.
