Tumblr user ageofaquitiaine noted that, since Sherlock had the ring he'd used to propose to Janine on his person when he was shot, the hospital could easily have given it to John for safekeeping. As she put it, "Do you think he kept the box in his pocket, refusing to look at it? Or do you think he stared at the ring, fiddling nervously, idly circling it around his pinkie because it was the only finger that would fit…"

Such high-quality angst requires redemptive fluff, and so I wrote this little ofering earlier this week. Unbeta'd and un-Britpicked, but I think it's fun nonetheless. Also, in the interest of full disclosure, I've been rereading [livejournal.com profile] earlgreytea68's wonderful "Nature and Nurture," and it's entirely possible some details of her version of parentlock have seeped in. And those of you noticing certain similarities between Sherlock's crossword and Leo McGarry's on the West Wing opener aren't imaging things. Enjoy.

I'm as big a fan of Johnlock fic tropes as the next person (there really is no upper limit to how many times I need to see Mycroft's meddling nudge them in just the right direction, apparently),. Every now and then, though, I come across a truly original story of how the two finally get together, that paints a unique version of their dynamics and what exactly that relationship (partnership – thing) might look like, and it's wonderful. The story I'm about to rec definitely qualifies.

Fracture Mechanics, by [livejournal.com profile] kres (AO3)

I should say up front that this story definitely earns its Explicit rating in the sexytiems department. I might even be tempted to call it PWP or erotica, which is by no means a slur in my book but also simultaneously... sort of accurate and also not at all. You'll see what I mean in a minute. Whether that's an enticement or something to make you hesitant, I leave up to you.

When you read Johnlock fanfic, you read a lot of what I can only call variations on a theme. It seems everyone writing in that particular corner of fandom wants to write how they fell in love, how they actually realized they were in love (and romantic, sexual love) and got past their basic failure to communicate. So you end up enjoying subtle twists and variations on that theme. It's like a Bach fugue, where the basic theme is the same but at minute sixteen it is different from minute four in a way that is just beautiful and makes your heart sigh.

Sometimes John runs out of the flat and Sherlock finds not having John there really bothers him. Sometimes it's the Three Garridebs scenario. And sometimes, apparently, it's absolutely hilarious auto-correct failures on the phone that puts sex on Sherlock's brain, to the point that the inevitable becomes the did-we-really-just-do-that?

Exhibit A in the latter category: What He Wrote, by [livejournal.com profile] fitofpique.

It's the quiet moments that really make this work, the subtleties of Sherlock's reaction – confusion, amusement, frustration. It's really very cute, particularly if you like to imagine Sherlock being a bit thick-headed and out of his element where matters of the heart are concerned. It's the "gay baby penguin" syndrome, as they put it over on Tumblr – but not in a way that makes him seem incapable or immature. And the sex scene that you can imagine it's driving toward is tastefully done, really in-character for how she writes these characters.

Really, it's a delightful mix of domesticity and humor and sexual tension and then relief of the same. I highly recommend it.

Emily Forsyth over at YouTube has put together a truly astounding fan-video of clips from "The Sign of Three"... repurposed, for lack of a better word. Treat it as AU if that helps; at an emotional level, it feels thoroughly right to me, and it's been a long, hard day so this makes me happy.

I've mentioned a few times that I was working on a BBC Sherlock fic for the [livejournal.com profile] come_at_once challenge. It's posted now. At 5,425 words it's probably the longest piece of fic I've written in quite a while, and I flatter myself that it's pretty good.

I started writing this fic because I wanted to see if I could write actual, unambiguous John/Sherlock slash in a way that seemed to work for me. Watching the BBC Sherlock show I've always thought there was subtext so loud it seemed to cross into regular canon at some point, and I've certainly found the fanfic other people wrote plausible, but I struggled to imagine writing fanfic that did more than toe that line. I'm still not sure I've actually managed that, for all that this is sexually explicit in the middle section. Leave it to my rather unique muses to write what began as a sort of PWP (though I think it acquired entirely too much plot to warrant that term by the end) without quite managing to to establish the relationship in my mind.

Outside of that, though, I think the first and third sections can be read on their own and are quite interesting, and while there's a certain amount of suggestion, it's really not at all explicit if you prefer to avoid that - PG at most. I also flatter myself that it gives an interesting look at the John-Sherlock and Sherlock-Mrs. Hudson friendships in HLV. Writing Mrs. Hudson was particularly fun - that's such a warm relationship, so uncharacteristic for Sherlock, and it's really nice to sink into it a bit.

Anyway, if you're interested in BBC Sherlock, I do hope you'll give it a try.

Title: Gasping [Explicit for middle section; 5,434 words]
Spoilers: Series Three through "His Last Vow"
Challenge: [livejournal.com profile] come_at_once [see notes at AO3 for precise prompts]
Warnings: consent issues, sort of. Technical infidelity, again sort of. This is Sherlock's headspace so nothing is all that straightforward. Also, questionable medical ethics and references to drug use (past tense).

Summary: "John must have made some answer. Certainly, his lips were moving and Sherlock was vaguely aware of sounds reaching his ears. His brain, however, thoroughly refused to cooperate, to focus on anything other than the sight laid out before him. John, his coat collar turned up against the rain, taking a long pull on the cigarette that had so recently been in Sherlock's mouth. The way his lips curled tightly around the cigarette, his cheeks hollowed ever so slightly, his eyes half-closed in an expression reminiscent of, well, other pleasures.

This was potentially problematic.

(ETA: After writing this I realized that this rec, and of course the story I'm recommending, has spoilers through HLV. Do I still need to put those warnings up?)

If I'm going to complain and worry about the way slash writers treat Mary like I did in my recent post, I should be just as quick to highlight people who do it right. Case in point:

Luminosity by [livejournal.com profile] what_alchemy

In this story John shows up on 221B one night, baby in tow, and they become a regular fixture in Sherlock's lives. Featuring Sherlock as reluctant uncle, babysitter (he's really much better than you'd expect, but oh so convincingly so!), and in the face of various legal struggles coming from his lack of official guardianship, BAMF-in-need-of-bail. The only time Mary is even mentioned is at the very end, and even there it's almost incidental.

What makes this work so well is that Mary is not demonized. Neither John nor Sherlock dwell on how his marriage broke down, though given the events and revelation of HLV (and, let's be honest, the way Watson avoids Mary's past rather than facing it), the odds were never exactly in the favor of this marriage surviving much past a year or two, if they made it that year. But Mary is not blasted. Hers and John's divorce is simply a Fact, as is the part that she signed away her maternal rights. I can see this being a loving act on Mary's part, really; if she couldn't provide a stable home-life because of her chosen profession and personality, if she didn't and couldn't have friends and families to help support her with the childraising thing, if she saw that John had all of that through Sherlock and Mrs. Hudson, if she trusted John to do right by her child, if the divorce happened early enough in Mina's infancy... I can see this being the kind of decision that a loving mother might make and that isn't at all neglectful.

It's also treated as something Mary chooses freely. She is shown respect and dignity, even if she isn't involved in the story much at all. So this is pretty well an example of what I harshly called annihilation (Mary is more or less completely removed from the picture), but it's done in such a way that Mary doesn't come off as cruel or evil... just not there, for reasons that could be unjustified but that also could be completely justified. I can easily imagine Mary having a fulfilling life, hopefully one with a minimum of body bags. That side of things isn't what what-alchemy seems to be telling, but it's not told in a way that portrays Mary with a fair measure of grace and sympathy, or at least gives the reader the freedom to see the story in that light.

This story really isn't about Mary, though. It's more about John and Sherlock and Mina forming a familial unit together. And it's so charming! Sherlock's discomfort around a child, Mina gnawing on microscope eye pieces and Sherlock using technical linguistic terminology describing her and that whole exchange with Mycroft at the end and... yeah. Entirely too much to absolutely melt over in this short fic. I also love the fact that the functional family comes first and that any romance, which is truly G-rated, comes organically out of that. Sherlock truly loves John and Mina, love that starts out as friendship but bleeds into agape love over the course of the story. Romance, such as it is, is the natural outgrowth of this rather than the driving force.

And speaking as a fan of the Johnlock genre who has enjoyed her share of stories where the romantic love comes first? That was one of the most beautiful paths to love of any sort that I've read in a long while. This story left me smiling and feeling all warm inside. Do check it out.

I've promised [livejournal.com profile] just_ann_now a blog post on my thoughts about Mary Morstan's character in the latest Sherlock series. This isn't that, though that blog post is in the works. Rather, I'd like to talk about a related problem that I've seen poke up a few times in Sherlock fanfic and that I'm afraid will become even more of an issue. Namely, it's how to deal with Mary's character when you're writing series three fic.

(Be forewarned: spoilers for "His Last Vow" and series three generally ahead.)

This isn't a problem limited to the Sherlock fandom, by a long shot. I saw the same thing happen in the Tolkien fandom, particularly in slash though I'm sure it could happen in het contexts as well. What typically happens is the author sees a certain connection between A and B and wants to explore it, but B already is married to C, or has a serious canonical relationship with her, something along those lines. Said author isn't interested in a one-night affair or a boyfriend on the side; she wants A to be the love of B's life. To make this seem less like a math equation, let's focus in on the John-Mary-Sherlock triangle. You want to get John and Sherlock together as the true love in each others' life, but now John's gone and married Mary. Oops!

I'm having a little get-together today (bigger, apparently, on the inside) in honor of the UK + internet release of "His Last Vow," the final episode of BBC Sherlock's third series. The eyeballs are keeping warm in the microwave, shock blankets are at hand, and all I have to do now is... wait. It's a skill I've developed over these last few months.

If I was virtuous I'd probably be emailing my students their work for this week. Instead, I found myself killing the time by reading Sherlock fanfic, or in this case meta. spoilers through TSOT )
