Isn't that always the way? I once read one of Plato's dialogues where he basically argues that laughter is our sense of relief when something bad happens to someone else - either that it's not as bad as it could have been, or that it's at least happening to them. Given that, it kind of makes sense that laughter would involve an element of pain.
