For those of you interested in such things, I got my thinky thoughts hat out tonight.

http://marta-bee.tumblr.com/post/115826639263/on-leaving-fandom

Basically, [livejournal.com profile] mid0nz declared she was "leaving fandom," which got me thinking about what this meant: what it meant to be fannish as opposed just to like a work, what that looked like in a fandom like Sherlock where so many people try to make a profit off their fanworks while still considering them fanfic and fanart, and separately, whether people who publicly declared they were leaving a fandom were really leaving at all.

It's about Sherlock specifically, obviously, but I think it's interesting to anyone who's lived the fannish life, whatever the fandom. Thoughts welcome!

PS - let me just say I approve of mid0nz's decision and wish her well. This is more a case of "ooh, nice springboard into those things you're often thinking about in the back of your head" than "let's make a substantive comment on that post on its own terms." So please keep that in mind.

To me leaving would be quitting all fandom sites and never posting on them again. My LJ used to be exclusively Tolkien but now I post about my cats and share every day life with the people I know and count as friends. It just happened that way.

I can't see myself as ever making an announcement as I've no idea how long my Muses will oblige for and I'd never take down my stories.
