martasfic... none other than our own Peter Jackson.
I must say, I'm unimpressed. I liked Jackson's vision for TTT and FOTR, it was what brought me into Tolkien, really, but I quickly moved on to fall in love with Tolkien first and realize the things I lovedd best were the ones that bore the most of Tolkien's influence, and the least of Jackson's. Which sounds awful, I know. But I just haven't cared for other things of his that I've seen. I don't care for Tintin or Lovely Bones or the Godzilla remake, and really, the Hobbit movies have done things to probably my favorite of all JRRT's books and ... well, I don't even want to go into them because it's depressing. I don't want to say I got into Sherlock around the time I did because he drove me away because there were a ton of things going into that move, from burn-out (I'd been writing Tolkien for over a decade) to bad fandom experiences (there were very good ones as well, but the bad ones made a lot of things just not fun anymore) to just being in a place in my life that I desperately needed something new to get excited over. But "The Hobbit" movies could probably have reanimated my love for the world, and instead they made it feel like nostalgia more than an active passion, because they were one more thing I had to work my way past to get to the world I loved.
All of which makes me... nervous, to put it mildly, about wanting Jackson anywhere near the Whoverse. On the one hand, I can see him being at his best when it comes to gods and monsters, with an emphasis on the monsters. He makes some fabulously decrepit baddies and really gets the transformative power of horror in his way. But I'm not sure how much of the sense of hope, the ireverence but in a good way, I can expect from him. Particularly for a finale. I don't know.
Then again, this is two whole series away (it's the 2015 finale, not the 2014 one, he's slated for), and maybe the show will be at a place that it needs his unique skillset. I have no way of knowing, really.

Date: 2014-07-24 10:29 pm (UTC)It also helped that I had recently started reading a promising AU that quickly went totally off the rails (causing me to quit reading--something rare for me) just before the latest installment, so I had that to tell me it could be worse. ;)
It could be really good, if the events leading up to it lend themselves to PJ's particular brand of storytelling--or it could go as off-the-rails as DOS did. No telling ahead of time.
