Give me a character and I will tell you...
* How I feel about this character
* All the people I ship romantically with this character
* My non-romantic OTP for this character
* My unpopular opinion about this character
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
* Something about them I consider true, even though it's only my head canon/fanon

Tolkien's obviously fair game, as is Sherlock (BBC or Doyle), Star Trek, Harry Potter, Swordspoint (first book), Hunger Games, new Doctor Who, Avengers... pretty much anything you've seen me blather on about.

Date: 2014-04-13 05:46 pm (UTC)* All the people I ship romantically with this character: Eowyn. I'm sure there were other people he was attracted to before that point, but for me the Faramir/Eowyn romance is so wonderfully iconic, I don't even want to imagine him with anyone else.
* My non-romantic OTP for this character: It's a close tie between Aragorn and Boromir, neatly divided by the fact that when one is on the scene the other by definition can't be. But I think the brotherly and pseudo-fatherly relationship I imagine between them respectively is a big part of what defines Faramir to my mind.
* My unpopular opinion about this character: He's almost certainly a bit racist. Not unreasonably so, given his historical situation, but I suspect he internalized a bit of his father's attitudes about people other than Gondorians. The way he talks about men of the twilight, and the way he doesn't really challenge Eowyn's statement that she's not worthy of him, that she'll be a social liability points to this at some level. I can't imagine him not having latent biases against the Haradrim, for instance, after what he saw in Ithilien before the War, and I've really enjoyed in my own fic trying to tease out just what that would look like.
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I desperately wanted to see that moment with him and Froo sitting by the wall in the sun after the War, that he longs for in Henneth Annun. I've read fanfic versions, but I really wish Tolkien would have given us an official version of this.
* Something about them I consider true, even though it's only my head canon/fanon: He and Boromir spent their summers in Dol Amroth, partly because until Imrahil produced an heir there was the very real possibility that he and Boromir might one day be in line for the princeship. That's why he jokingly calls himself and Boromir princes of the city.

Goodness, so did I. I'm one of the people who wrote about it in fanfic. There are so many scenes including Faramir that I longed to see on screen.

Date: 2014-04-17 04:42 am (UTC)I can definitely see Faramir as a bit racist as well, given his great pride in his Numenorean heritage and the fact that he's been at war with invading Haradrim for awhile. But I also think that his attitude would have changed a lot during/after the Ring War, after meeting the hobbits, realizing that it was not Numenorean blood and might but two Hobbits who defeated Sauron, and also falling in love with a lady who was part Rohir ('Middle Men'). Also, even in his long speech to the hobbits (in Ithilien) about the glorious Numenorean heritage of Gondor, Faramir specifically mentions the wisdom of Gondor's lords in their inclusion of the distinctly non-Numenorean fisher-people and other groups in Gondor's lands, and how those peoples contributed to Gondor's prosperity.
If you're exploring Avengers, what is your take on Hawkeye (the comics character was one of my favorites for many years, at least through the 90's)?

Date: 2014-04-13 06:24 pm (UTC)* All the people I ship romantically with this character: Again, canon all the way. Finduilas.
* My non-romantic OTP for this character: Aragorn, The psychology behind that relationship, the sense of a battle between two giants - it doesn't get much better than that.
* My unpopular opinion about this character: I tend to think my whole interpretation of him is unpopular at some level, or was at the time I was forming it though thankfully the fandom's grown more understanding of him over the years. If I had to pick one, it's that he was doing precisely what duty required when he was skeptical of Aragorn's right to rule Gondor. This is what Gondor's established legal precedent required, and while I hope he would have heard out the evidence and perhaps consulted with scholars on what was permissible, it would have been irresponsible to give the throne to someone without an established claim.
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: That he would have lived. From a story perspective I get why he had to die, and I definitely think Faramir makes a better non-ruling Fourth Age steward than Faramir ever would have. But it always seemed a bit of a cop-out for Denethor not to have to make his peace with Aragorn and get on in the new world.
* Something about them I consider true, even though it's only my head canon/fanon: You asked for one, and I'll give you three:
1) He has been dear friends with Hurin of the Keys his entire life, precisely because Hurin is smart and practical and straightforward but lacks the social status to be a practical threat. As such, Hurin doesn't bow down before him but he can be an uncomplicated personal support to Denethor. He also provides the extended family his own sons need in the city.
2) Growing up and even as an adult, Bard (of Dale) was a personal hero of his: the captain who slew the dragon and built his realm up in time of peace. When he finally met him as a young man, he was more than a bit underwhelmed. Still, he told his story to his own sons when they were young and was quite pleased when Faramir took up the bow.
3) He has a chess game going with various leaders across the realms of Middle-earth. Hurin will duck into his office throughout the day and make a move; others, like Mithrandir, occasionally sent their moves by mail. Originally the boards were set on an out-of-the-way low table in his inner office, but at some point Boromir tripped over it, upsetting a decade's worth of games including (among others) one where he was three moves from checkmating Dain Ironfoot in a game he was using to convince the dwarves they were worthy recipients of dwarvish weapons. To the day they died, Denethor never quite let Boromir forget it.

Date: 2014-04-13 02:21 am (UTC)Rory [Doctor Who]
Date: 2014-04-13 06:50 pm (UTC)* All the people I ship romantically with this character: Amy, of course. :-)
* My non-romantic OTP for this character: You know, I'm not sure i have one. I like the way he and the Doctor go toe to toe, I guess.
* My unpopular opinion about this character: Doctor Who isn't my fandom enough to work out what would be popular or not. But I do think he has a bit of a controlling-Amy problem. The way he and the Doctor talk about her sometimes, it's as if she's something they pass between them. That's Moffat being bad at writing female characters more than anything, though. And knowing what I know about Moffat, I hardly think that particular assessment will earn me any hate.
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I'd like to know a bit more about his background. It's like his life begins and ends with Amy.
* Something about them I consider true, even though it's only my head canon/fanon: He's more than smart enough to be a doctor. He genuinely enjoys caring for people, and also likes the time to pursue other interests that pop up like his research into the TARDIS, which is why he opted to be a nurse.
Re: Rory [Doctor Who]
Date: 2014-04-14 12:13 am (UTC)As for your last comment, I think that's true of perhaps the majority of nurses (these days at least of the ones I know) who choose to be nurses because they prefer the direct patient care that few modern doctors experience. I know it's true of the nurse I've been married to for the last 37 years! (Who, come to think of it, has a lot of qualities in common with Rory!)

Date: 2014-04-13 07:19 pm (UTC)* How I feel about this character: I've always had a soft spot for him. So delightfully put upon but always stands his own ground.
* All the people I ship romantically with this character: I honestly can't imagine Martin having a romance, certainly not with anyone other than the occasional minor character who I don't have strong feelings about.
* My non-romantic OTP for this character: Martin/Arthur. I love Douglas, no doubt, but he's so charmingly longsuffering and protective of Arthur, and the two balance each other out so well in a yin and yang way. Don't even get me started on that moment in "Douz" when he suggested taxi-ing the plane down the highway to the Kabili.
* My unpopular opinion about this character: I always found him a bit unconvincing at a practical level. The whole no-salary-at-all thing. It's okay because it's a comedy, but it kept me from taking his character all that seriously.
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: like with your recent fanfic, I always suspected there was something messed up with Martin in terms of his character. Psychologically, I mean. I would have liked to have seen Carolyn or Douglas be a bit more proactive in that regard.
* Something about them I consider true, even though it's only my head canon/fanon: As a child he was much more ready to take risks than he is as an adult. Some risk went badly wrong, and that's why he clings to the rules so thoroughly as he does, because they make him feel safe.
