1. Actually, the Humanities Aren’t in Crisis, by Jordan Weissmann [Atlantic]

If you follow policy discussions about American higher ed, you hear a lot of talk about how no one is studying the humanities. This is a good fact-checking of that claim – very interesting and, for a pro-humanities piece, with a lot more quantitative data than you would expect.

2. Fatherhood, Manhood, and Having It All, by Conor Williams [Daily Beast]

On why stay-at-home dads are actually quite masculine, even if they don’t meet the normal stereotype. I suspect most stay-at-home parents of either gender will resonate with this.

3. “There are over 2,000 crimes recorded per 100,000 population in the U.K.,” compared to “466 violent crimes per 100,000″ in the United States. [PolitiFact]

As part of an investigation of whether a gun control meme is true, PolitiFact has a really interesting discussion of the perils of comparing crime statistics between different countries.

4. Jesus and Moses Went on Cleanses. That Doesn’t Mean you Should., by Judith Shulevitz [New Republic]

A science journalist looks at juice cleanses and concludes they don’t work scientifically but may have an interesting and important role to play spiritually. Good look at the trend.

5. Judaism 101: Gehenna (Hell) [Love Joy Feminism]

Some Jewish readers at the “Love Joy Feminism” blog talked about different Jewish views of hell. Really, quite fascinating.

6. Education of a cancer nurse, by Laura Devaney [Salon]

This is a heartrending but beautiful account of what it’s like to be a nurse on a cancer ward. I was particularly taken by her description of cancer surgery being like a second birth. This reminded me deeply of the Biblical passage about being born again, and gave me much food for thought on this idea that miracles could be magnificent but still messy. Really, a very good read on many levels.

4. Snape’s Demise from DH2

I don’t think I realized until today just how *awesome* this track is. It weaves so many themes so beautifully together, the Hogwarts and Lily themes in particular, but does it in such a subtle way. I cam imagine Snape gasping for breath and the two good things in his life (all the young minds he’s molded and his love of Lily) sort of overwhelming him without him being able to consciously control them. Gah.

This is my Faramir/Eowyn ballad. I can easily see Eowyn thinking things along these lines when she is first getting comfortable with being vulnerable around Faramir and not having to lock herself off.
