Waaaaay back in 2004, I wrote a story from the perspective of the girl Smeagol left behind after he discovered the Ring and was kicked out of his grandmother’s home. I know that I’m biased, but I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for this OC. Something about doomed romance and the way love is transformed without really dying off.

So I thought I’d repost it in honor of Valentine’s Day and the Hobbit movie, which hopefully is making people interested in these characters again.

Oh, I remember that! It was such an impressive little tale. Poor Halga! How much of what she saw in Smeagol was truly there? And if it was, that makes it even sadder...*sigh*

I'm glad to take you down memory lane. It was good to look back, and I've made many friends in Tolkien fandom since then so I hope others enjoy reading it for the first time. I think there are writing mechanics I'd want to go back and change, if I was inclined to do a rewrite, but the meat of the story will always have a special place in my heart.

I think a bit of Smeagol was there. This to my mind is set maybe 10-20 years after he found the Ring, and he's obviously still skulking around near his family. Halga is clearly right not to approach him, but there's enough there that I can imagine him recognizing her, even wishing he could have her back for a moment. I imagine sights like this could bring on a bit of a temporary reprieve, like thinking about sucking eggses with his grandmother during the riddle game with BIlbo.
