Why does this song never get old?
Because it really, really doesn't. I saw Batman tonight and they had a trailer. The sound was awful, there was a baby crying - and I still got goosebumps.
Also, for those of us struggling to wait for December, here's the full Lord of the Rings symphony. It's a full two hours but good to listen to while you're doing other things.

Date: 2012-08-13 01:18 pm (UTC)I've said it before: of all the many things PJ did right (as opposed to the equal number of things he did wrong) uniting Howard Shore and Middle-earth has to be his best decision ever.

Date: 2012-08-14 01:12 am (UTC)I was in England, laid up with a sprained ankle, and listening to the BBC classical station because it was too hot to move (my room had no AC). This would have been late March of 2002. I had seen Fellowship in theaters but been unimpressed - I'd been rushing from somewhere and seen it with my mum who wasn't really into it. I was told to read the book but never quite got around to it. Then Two Towers was even less impressive and less coherent. Anyway, I was listening to the BBC and they played the theme from ROTK as a kind of preview of the soundtrack, Aragorn's coronation and the return to the Shire. It was so beautiful and inspiring and mythic all at once! I held my breath when Viggo sang Et Eärello Endorenna utúlien. Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar tenn' Ambar-metta - it touched me in almost a religious way.
The way the announcers discussed it pointed to how it keyed in so well not just to what Jackson was doing, but even more to what Tolkien had done, and they gave that quote about Gandalf's laugh when Frodo woke up. And my first thought was: forget Jackson, I need to read those books. I called up the local bookstore and practically begged the clerk to deliver the books and when I explained I was injured and the books I wanted to read (she was a fan too, by luck), the lady offered to bring it by after her shift. And I read through the trilogy inside of a week.
Given the crime against Tolkien that was movie!Denethor, I'm not sure that was the wisest move. But it definitely inspired me to start writing. So credit (blame?) for all my fic over the years, and the MEFAs and my work at HASA and everything else, can really be laid at Howard Shore's feet. At least as the starting point.
