This is for Dwim, who may laugh almost as hard at it as I just did, and for all my other friends who are in academia (or were, at some point).

Many of the statements in this paper are also noted as coming from a person only identified as ‘Ibid’ in the footnotes. I am not skeptical of Ibid’s view, but I would like to find his/her article and read it for myself.

Head/desk, their love is so concussing...

ROFL.

If this was meant to be a wisecrack, the student should get extra credit. ;)

I can't speak for this one, but I've heard it from one of my own students and he seemed quite genuine. On the other hand, yes it would be heavy if it was a wisecrack. We can only hope!

Don't we educators have so much to be proud of? :-S

I've heard this one from my own students, actually. Oy.

SMSW is usually authentic. It may not be a university student (though most are). As you say: argh.

Och, bless. Yet another reason to teach proper referencing/citation.

On the one hand, it is a bit mad in this day and age that we still use Latin abbreviations for such things, and no-one's going to know that unless they've been taught it. OTOH, wouldn't you ask?

(This is why I strive to keep my face totally straight when students shuffle up to the Enquiry Desk and begin with "This is probably a really stupid question, but..." - if they're too intimidated to ask a lecturer, they can at least ask a friendly librarian!)

Bless the reference librarians, and I mean that in the best possible way! I have actually been asked that once by a student (last semester), which is part of what made the line so hilarious. I do a class session on primary vs. secondary sources, just what is wrong with Wikipedia, and how to use library resources, but it needs more than a single hour to cover the finer points of course.

On the one hand, I'm sympathetic. You're right, it's a bit absurd that the Latin phrase is still used. OTOH, though, if you google "ibid" the very first result is the Wikipedia entry whose first paragraph gives a very clear and straight-forward explanation. Methinks curiosity may not be this student's strong point...
