Apr. 16th, 2012 06:12 pmThis is for Dwim, who may laugh almost as hard at it as I just did, and for all my other friends who are in academia (or were, at some point).
Head/desk, their love is so concussing...
Many of the statements in this paper are also noted as coming from a person only identified as ‘Ibid’ in the footnotes. I am not skeptical of Ibid’s view, but I would like to find his/her article and read it for myself.

Date: 2012-04-17 10:05 pm (UTC)On the one hand, it is a bit mad in this day and age that we still use Latin abbreviations for such things, and no-one's going to know that unless they've been taught it. OTOH, wouldn't you ask?
(This is why I strive to keep my face totally straight when students shuffle up to the Enquiry Desk and begin with "This is probably a really stupid question, but..." - if they're too intimidated to ask a lecturer, they can at least ask a friendly librarian!)

Date: 2012-04-17 10:38 pm (UTC)On the one hand, I'm sympathetic. You're right, it's a bit absurd that the Latin phrase is still used. OTOH, though, if you google "ibid" the very first result is the Wikipedia entry whose first paragraph gives a very clear and straight-forward explanation. Methinks curiosity may not be this student's strong point...
