You know what's a wasted skilll these days? Handwriting. Not just cursive-font but any kind of handwriting. Truly: I have a box of pens by my microwave, because I write things so rarely, I inevitably lose a pen by the next time I need it. I bought them shortly after I moved to the new place in October and it's still half full because the only thing I ever write is my rent check each month, which doesn't accept electronic payment. Literally everything else is typed.

It's a shame, because I actually do have decently nice scrit when I take the time to do more than chicken-scratch.

Ah, well. There's your observation for the day. Everyone who said you needed to learn cursive and people woul judge you by your ability to write nicely and neatly? I name thee purveyor of LIES.

(Also: Happy Easter/Passover to those of you celebrating it and a good nearly-weekend to the the rest of you happening froods.)

(Also-also: I don't know why I'm so perennially exhausted, but that doesn't mean I don't think of you lot regularly. Tumblr is easier because you don't actually have to put much into it, it's very low-key and quick. But here it feels like I actually have to make the words go, which seems beyond me most times these days. But I miss hanging out here and hope you all are doing well.)

Haha, if it makes you feel better, I still appreciate legible handwriting and get annoyed when I can't read someone's writing (not as much as an issue these days, obviously). But yes, our elementary school teachers clearly did not anticipate the overwhelming preponderance of digital communications in our future.

I grew up in a note-writing family. I'm still constantly writing myself little notes and reminders on scraps of paper, grocery lists, calendar (paper calendar!) entries, etc., so I still go through pens at a nice rate!

My handwriting is appalling, but I love a super fine pen and a Moleskin notebook. I've taken class notes in those for years at workshops and seminars. I'm still using that system today for my nutrition class and self-development course.

I will kind of die on the "we need to learn cursive" hill (though not as on the "judge you by your handwriting hill," because that's an archaic idea whose time long passed). Not only can it be beautiful, but nearly everyone has a lot of personal family historical documentation that's written in cursive and it would be a shame if only dedicated historians knew how to read it. I don't think that not teaching cursive as a rule will cause all knowledge of it to be lost--no one writes with hieroglyphics anymore, but there are dedicated people who can--but on a smaller scale, how sad would it be if you found a stash of love letters or a box of recipe cards in the attic and had no way to read them. Anyway, yes, keep teaching the children cursive (I say knowing that I'm probably fighting a losing battle).
