I am very much in love with these socially-distancing kitty-kats. I read somewhere that cats like boxes because it gives them a sense of security, and I wonder if something similar might be at work here.

Also, with Bence Peter, the pianist on YouTube. The sheer creativity and raw skill is truly flabbergasting. The term "cover" doesn't quite do it justice.

Take, for instance, this fusion of Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River" and JS Bach's Tocatta & Fugue in D Minor. Who would ever think of combining those two? (Says the fanfic writer who's been fooling around with a If Beale Street Could Talk/Doyle fusion for two weeks now, so I'm hardly one to talk, and I'm certainly not complaining in any event.(

Or in terms of sheer skill, check out his cover of the song "Shallow" from A Star is Born. I don't think I've ever heard someone playing the piano like a stringed instrument.

I've also read the new Hunger Games novel, but I need to think about how I feel about it. I want to like it; I definitely want to reread it, and now's not the time to really go into spoilery details I don't think. I will say for a whole host of reasons it was probably published at the absolute worst time given current politics: it's a story worth thinking through, but it's also very hard to give it a fair hearing just now. Can't hold that against her, of course. But a lot of the skills people found lacking in the original trilogy (like plausible world-building) seem much more of an issue here. Maybe I've grown more picky, or maybe I'm just more tired these days so not as easily swept along. I did like the premise and a lot of the concepts, but my first impression was I could have written it better myself!

Anywho. Back to the paid work.

As if "Shallow" wasn't haunting enough! That gave me goosebumps.

The cats are great fun, but the music! Good find. I'm going to have to look into his work more closely, but that was a wonderful thing to start my day. Thanks!

It really did! Soulful, and as a pianist myself, musically fascinating.

NYC is slowly but surely getting back to normal. My work is planning to open up week after next, though I'm asking if I could come in an hour later so I'd avoid the subway being so crushed. I've done nothing but complain about working from home, but I do think I'm going to miss the freedom of it. (The AC will be some payback, though.)

I was having a Day with a capital D last week, and so played around a bit on Youtube. (Turns out, quite a lot of movie themes have accordion covers, and some of them are quite good!) I guess after a while a pianist who does covers/reinterpretations of others' songs wasn't too far of a jump for Youtube's algorithms and here we are.

I agree - I wonder what I've been doing with my life that I didn't find him until now. He's wonderful!
