For those of you interested in this kind of thing, I was compelled to a defense of book!Thranduil's virtue.

Apparently, if there's one thing that will draw me back to the Tolkien fandom like a moth to the flame it's seeing the opportunity to stand up for a misunderstood character, gruff after years spent fighting a long defeat against Sauron, who's been almost criminally represented by Peter Jackson...

Go you! I think lots of people who don't know the backstory underestimate the pressures Thranduil is under at that time; but I also think there's enough evidence just in The Hobbit itself to show that Tolkien thinks the Elvenking is basically a Good Egg. After all, Beorn for example is no more trusting of the Dwarves to begin with.

Let alone once you do get into the deep backstory, and realise that this is an Elf who quite possibly had centuries of PTSD after leading the shattered remnant of the Greenwood's army back from the Dagorlad.

And then if you consider that Thranduil may well know - or if (my own personal theory) not know for sure, since he doesn't seem to be a member of the White Council, but he suspects - where the other Rings are, then he would be understandably bitter about having been left without one, when he is considerably nearer to Dol Guldur than either Rivendell or the Grey Havens are!

(Basically, Thranduil rocks. Let's just agree not to mention the elk, OK?...)
