I’m beginning to see the appeal of writing Silmfic. Reading “Of the Ruin of Beleriand and the Fall of Fingolfin” for the “Courage” BMEM prompt, and now that I finally can tell those “F” elves apart (hint: Finrod is not Finarfin, and Felagund isn’t a new guy at all), just… wow. It’s an awesome, epic story, and if Jackson ever threatens to adapt it I will personally disembowel him with with Maedhros’s one-handed sword, or sic Glaurung on him, or something. But more to the point, there’s barely a sentence that doesn’t bring on a new nuzgul.

Take just this one sample:

Maedhros did deeds of surpassing valour, and the Orcs fled before his face, for since his torment upon Thangorodrim his spirit burned like a white fire within, and he was as one that returns from the dead. Thus the great fortress upon the Hill of Himring could not be taken, and many of the most valiant that remained, both of the people of Dorthonion, and of the east marches, rallied there to Maedhros, and for a while he closed once more the Pass of Aglon, so that the Orcs could not enter Beleriand by that road.

I’m not even writing that particular story. Today. But man oh man do I want to. Problem is, to paraphrase Gandalf, ten thousand words would not suffice. This is a story requiring more long-form skills than I possess.

That one is not one of the more popular nuzgul, but I...umm...wrote about it.
I just checked my word count: 16212 (one of my longest stories).

I have 994 words of Fingolfin's battle with Morgoth, and that was just set up for the story I am actually tell. Now to push on with the rest.

I am toying with the idea of doing the full alphabet of that first day's prompts. It would take me beyond March to do it, but I think it would be a nice structure of stories.

*glee* That is what I love about the Silm: it's so PACKED with possibilities for fic, with the largest events given sparse description. So much room for us to flesh out stories!

Just a quickie to say yes, it's hard to write anything short that is Silmfic-based! And I am very intrigued by your recent BMEM story and will take the time to savor and read it properly and write my thoughts. I read the ending first (yes, eep) and now want to read the whole thing. I've only written one completed Silmfic story... wait, yeah, because I'd started one set in Numenor but didn't get very far. Perhaps I'll revive that one, but I'd really like to finish the other 2 Tolkien fics that are further along.

All that to say: while I don't comment very often, I really enjoy your thoughtful posts on all kinds of topics, and I'm looking forward to reading your story. ♥
