Apropos to this morning's post, here are some songs poking fun at racism. Offered up in the hopes that laughing at something makes it that much easier to deal with.

First, "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist" from Avenue Q, suggested by [livejournal.com profile] aliana1.

Which brings me to my first "100 things" quote.

Gary: Now there was a fine upstanding black man!
Princeton: Who?
Gary: Jesus Christ.
Kate: But, Gary, Jesus was white.
Gary: No, Jesus was black.
Kate: No, Jesus was white.
Gary: No I'm pretty sure that Jesus was black --
Princeton: Guys, guys... Jesus was Jewish!

As if that solves the question! (Remember the airlift of Jewish Ethiopians back in the '80s?) It's kind of like trying to sort out whether the pharaohs were white or black because they were Egyptian: it just bumps the issue to a different question. The fact that anyone would think that cleared up the issue totally cracked me up...

Also, what post on tongue-in-cheek racial humor would be complete without Randy Newman?

Hey, Marta - did my other post get marked as spam? It only has a link to another non-PC song - Tim Minchin on "Prejudice." I don't know if anyone can see it.

The only reason it's not included is I'd never heard it! Will have to listen to it tonight - thanks for the recommendation.

I don't think so; I could still see it after I'd logged out of my account.

Hooray, I've created another Avenue Q fan! (I also like the songs "The Internet is for Porn" and "Schadenfreude.") Thanks for sharing the Randy Newman, too.

Yay, I *love* Tim Minchin. Particularly like the way that he subverts expectations - he's nearly 3 minutes into that song before you realise that the "couple of g's,an e and an r, an i and an n" aren't going to be the word you think they are.

Marta, if you look for some more of his stuff on YouTube, you might enjoy - be warned, he's a militant atheist, but he can laugh at himself in that regard just as much as he does at religious zealotry...
