I just finished reading over your dissertation proposal. I'm not a philosopher, nor a student of religion, despite hanging out in the Div School for a while a couple of years ago. But it seems like you've got a really good idea there, one that's certainly worth developing a bit. Having read the actual document, I'm now more inclined to suspect that you ended up with subpar advising rather than being inherently unsuited for academic work. The proposal as it stands needs some work, especially on the beginning, but that's the sort of thing that an advisor is for.

Certainly grieve as much as you need to, and take whatever time you need to get your feet back under you. But I do think there's some good philosophical stuff tucked in your brain, and you've got something to offer people. If you don't want to take another shot at the Ph.D, you might look into work at a community college. I think most of them only require an MA, which you have, and they focus on teaching, which I think you could be really good at.
