Title: Pride and Despair: A Defense of Ecthelion's Son - Part I
Rating: Teen
Warning(s): discussion of mature concepts
Summary: Denethor is one of the most-criticized characters in Tolkien fandom. Movie-inspired fanons have certainly not done him any favors, but he is disliked and even hated by fans who had read the books long before the movies came out. In this essay I attempt to address some of the most common criticisms against him, and develop a biography of what his life might have been like.

I. INTRODUCTION

"Authority is not given to you, Steward of Gondor, to order the hour of your death. And only the heathen kings, under the domination of the Dark Power, did thus, slaying themselves in pride and despair, murdering their kin to ease their own death." (Gandalf, "The Pyre of Denethor," The Lord of the Ring)

Title: An Elf By Any Other Name.... ; or, A Short and Speculative History of a Certain Elven Emissary
Rating: General
Summary: Galdor. He's a minor character, to be sure, popping up at the Council of Elrond and quickly fading into the backdrop of Tolkien's epic tapestry. But, inexplicably, he caught my eye, dragging me through a scavenger-hunt through Tolkien's various sources as I looked for more information on him.

Obviously this essay is about Galdor on its surface, but I hope it will be of interest to anyone who's ever wanted to know more about one of Tolkien's many minor characters.

Title: On Canon and Fanfic
Summary: What exactly qualifies as "A.U.?" Is it a negative term? Is any fanfic really canon-consistent, or is it all alternate universe? In this brief essay I attempt to define what precisely I mean when I use this term, and along the way explore the relationship between canon and fanfic in general.
Rating: General

(The below essay was originally written as the forum post "To AU or Not to AU" at my blog, and was inspired by JunoMagic's fabulous post, which is in turn in response to a discussion on the Silmarillion Writers Guild listserv. But I think it can stand on its own.)
